Topic: Genital Blisters, Lumps and Open Sores
Description
Trauma is possibly the most common cause of genital sores or rashes. There is usually a clear history of recent trauma (eg. over-energetic masturbation or sexual intercourse). These sores always heal quickly (within a couple of days).
Do's
If you have any concerns about blisters, lumps or sores in the genital area, see your doctor, family planning clinic or sexual health clinic.
Tips
Blisters, lumps and open sores may be due to sexually transmitted infections including:
- herpes simplex infection (most common sexually transmitted cause of genital ulceration in Australia)
- syphilis
- genital warts
- molluscum contagiosum
- donovanosis
- chancroid
- lymphogranuloma
- venereum
- scabies which have been scratched and have become infected.
Other causes of blisters, lumps and open sores include:
- cysts of the skin
- reactions to medications
- non-infectious skin diseases.
Any blisters or open sores of the genitals increase the risk of spread of sexually transmitted infections including HIV.
