Topic: National Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Program Register

Description

Human papillomavirus vaccine has been developed to help prevent the most common types of cervical cancer.  The vaccine is available free to girls in Year 8 through the School Based Vaccination Program.

A National HPV Vaccination Program Register has been established by the Australian Government to collect data about the HPV Vaccination Program.

Practical Advice

Data collection

What is the National HPV Vaccination Program Register?

The HPV Register collects data about HPV vaccination events. This includes details of girls and women vaccinated in school programs or by general practitioners and other immunisation providers.

Personal information collected will be used to evaluate the impact of the HPV vaccination on cervical cancer rates, to issue confirmation the course is complete and to contact vaccine recipients if booster doses are required. If details are not included in the HPV Register, it will not be possible to contact you about missed or booster doses.

All personal details will be kept confidential and no-one will be able to identify individuals from the information reported from the HPV Register.

Will information be collected if I am vaccinated with the HPV vaccine?

Yes. Personal details (excluding health information) will be entered onto Queensland Health's VIVAS vaccination database and transferred to the Australian Government's National HPV Vaccination Program Register. Collection of such information requires provision of your, or if your daughter is being vaccinated, her Medicare Number.

By signing the school program consent form, parents are agreeing to disclose their daughter's personal information for collection and transfer to the Australian Government National HPV Vaccination Program Register. If you are being vaccinated by your doctor or other immunisation provider, you will be asked to sign a consent form agreeing for the data to be sent to the HPV Register.

Information will only be provided to the HPV Register with the consent of the individual or their parent or guardian. You can ask for your information to be removed at any time by writing to the HPV Register.

Information may be used to contact vaccine recipients if booster doses are found to be necessary.

Is it possible to access the vaccination information from the Register?

Yes. You can phone the HPV Register on 1800 478 734 or at www.hpvregister.org.au
